Old French purpurayn, Middle French, French purpurin) of a purple colour, purplish (early 12th cent. in Anglo-Norman), also in heraldic use (beginning of the 13th cent. in Old French as porprin ) < purper , purpre purpure n. + -in -ine suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin purpurinus (perhaps) of or relating to the colour purple (second half of the 12th cent. in a British glossarial source), Italian porporino purplish (early 14th cent.).Compare Old English purpuren (compare note at purpure n. and adj.), Middle Dutch purpurijn , purperijn (Dutch purperen ), Middle Low German purpuren , Old High German purpurīn (Middle High German purperīn , German purpurn ), all ultimately < classical Latin purpura (see purpure n.) + the Germanic base of -en suffix4.
