Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: punch v.1, -able suffix.
Etymology: < punch v.1 + -able suffix.
1. Of coins: legal tender, not clipped. Obsolete. Act 7 & 8 Will. & Mary, c. 1 §9 (1695–6) stipulated that hammered coins in circulation and not damaged by clipping should be ‘struck through..with a solid Punch’ before being circulated further, as a means of preventing clipping.
