Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin putus.
Etymology: < classical Latin putus clean, pure (perhaps < the same Indo-European base as Lithuanian pjauti to cut, pjuklas saw, Old Prussian piuclan sickle); chiefly in the phrase pūrus putus pure pute (also pūrus ac putus pure and pute), i.e. very pure ( < pūrus pure adj. + putus).
Now rare (archaic).
Pure, mere; utter, outright, unqualified. Only in pure pute, pure and pute.
