Etymology: < French putatif (late 14th cent. in filz putatis , plural) and its etymon post-classical Latin putativus imaginary, unreal (late 2nd or early 3rd cent. in Tertullian), supposed (12th cent. in pater putativus : see putative father n. at Compounds) < classical Latin putāt- , past participial stem of putāre to think (see putation n.) + -īvus -ive suffix.
