Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Perhaps also partly a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: quality n., -ive suffix; qualitative adj.
Etymology: Irregularly < quality n. + -ive suffix. Compare earlier qualitative adj. In some cases perhaps a misspelling of, or typographical error for, qualitative adj.Compare the following earlier apparently isolated use as noun:1586 W. Bullokar Pamphlet for Gram. 41 (margin) Qualitiues end in ly, wise, or are adjectives, compounded with a, or used adverbially.
