Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; probably partly modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin qualificat- , qualificare , -ive suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin qualificat-, past participial stem of qualificare qualify v. + -ive suffix; compare -ative suffix. In later use probably after French qualificatif (a1765 as noun, 1801 as adjective). Compare post-classical Latin qualificativus , adjective (1704), Italian qualificativo , adjective (1575). Compare earlier qualification n., qualifier n., qualifying adj., and also earlier qualify v.
