Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Etymon: Arabic ḥinnā'.
Etymology: Ultimately < Arabic ḥinnā' (in colloquial pronunciation also ḥanna), via several Western European languages. Compare earlier alcanna n.Compare Middle French, French henné (c1540), †henne (1541), French †hanna (1662), †hina (1677 in the passage translated in quot. 1677 at sense 2), Italian henna (1548 as chena , 1550 in the passage translated in quot. 1600 at sense 1a as hena , 1616 as hana and hanna ), and (with the Arabic definite article al- prefixed) Spanish alheña (end of the 15th cent.). Specific forms. With the form kanna compare occasional forms with initial /k/ in other European languages, e.g. Italian †chena (see above), French †kenas (1677), †cna (1706), †knah (1732).

b. black henna n. any of several dyes used to stain the hair and skin a dark brown or black colour, originally made from the powdered leaves of the indigo plant ( Indigofera tinctoria) combined with henna to dye the hair, now typically consisting of paraphenylenediamine (PPD) or other dyes added to henna and used to dye the skin.The use of black henna containing PPD may result in chemical burns, allergic reaction, and contact dermatitis.
