Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pulpitum.
Etymology: In sense 1 < post-classical Latin pulpitum pulpit, ambo (3rd cent.), part of the architecture of a church (6th cent.), screen or similar structure in a church (in an undated text in Du Cange as pulpitrum ), specific use of classical Latin pulpitum pulpit n.; in sense 2 directly < classical Latin pulpitum.
1. Church Architecture. A stone screen in a church separating the choir from the nave, frequently surmounted by a loft housing the organ.
