单词 pulperia
释义

pulperian.

Brit. /ˌpʌlpəˈriːə/, U.S. /ˌpəlpəˈriə/
Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish pulpería.
Etymology: < American Spanish pulpería grocery shop (1574) < pulpero grocer (1572; of uncertain origin: see note) + -ia -y suffix3. Compare French pulperia (1818; < Spanish). J. Corominas Diccionario crítico etimológico castellano e hispánico (1981) at pulpa suggests that Spanish pulpero is formed (with the suffix -ero -eer suffix1) from pulpa pulp n. in a generalized sense ‘fruit, esp. tropical fruit’. However, although pulpa is amply attested in the sense ‘fleshy part of fruit’ from the late 14th cent. onwards, there appears to be no written evidence for the sense that Corominas suggests. The earliest written records of both pulpería and pulpero come from Peruvian sources, and all examples of pulpería before the mid 17th cent. appear in an Andean context; it is possible that pulpa developed an (unrecorded) regional sense ‘fruit in general’ in the Andean countries. Although alcoholic drinks (rather than fruit) are frequently specifically mentioned as items sold in pulperias (compare quots.), an etymological connection of the word with pulquería pulqueria n. is rejected by Corominas, and seems unlikely given the different regional distributions of both words (pulpería is usually found in South American, pulquería in Mexican contexts; compare quots.). O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the non-naturalised pronunciation (pulperī·ă) /pulpeˈria/.
In Spanish-speaking America: a grocery shop or tavern.
