Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin adamās.
Etymology: < classical Latin adamās (see adamant n.). Compare Old French adamas (12th cent.), Old Occitan adamas (c1350).
Now historical.
A very hard substance mentioned by Pliny and other classical writers, variously identified (cf. adamant n.). Formerly also (without reference to classical writers): †a diamond (obsolete).
