Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps the same word as pulls n.2, although compare also Dutch peul (Middle Dutch pōle , peule ), Middle Low German pūle , both in sense ‘husk, shell, pod’ (perhaps < the same Germanic base as boil n.1).It is uncertain whether the same word is shown by the following (compare also note at pulls n.2):1877 E. Etymology: < pull v. Compare earlier pulls n.1, and see discussion at that entry.It is uncertain whether the same word is shown by the following (compare also note at pulls n.1):1765 C. Varley Yorks. Farmer i. ii. 16 Riddle it [sc. seed flax] first through a wide riddle, in order to take out all the long straws, pulse, &c.1855 J. C. Morton Cycl. Agric. II. (Gloss.) 725/1 Pulse, (Lincolns.), the short straw taken out in dressing corn by the riddle.
Now English regional (Yorkshire).
Short pieces of straw left as refuse after straight straw has been drawn (see draw v. 43); = pull-tails n. at pull- comb. form 1c. Also: heads of corn broken off from stalks during threshing.
