Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Italian putto, puto.
Etymology: < Italian putto, †puto representation of a boy (naked or in swaddling clothes) personifying the god of love, cupid (a1465), specific sense of putto boy, lad (mid 13th cent.) < classical Latin pūtus boy, child < the same base as puer boy, child (see puerile adj.). N.E.D. (1909) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (pu·tto) /ˈputto/. In plural form putti after the Italian plural form.
Esp. in Renaissance or Baroque art: a representation of a child, usually a boy, naked or in swaddling clothes; a cherub, a cupid.
