Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin pseudepigraphus , -ous suffix; Greek ψευδεπίγραϕος , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pseudepigraphus falsely ascribed to an author, spurious (4th or 5th cent. in Jerome) or its etymon Hellenistic Greek ψευδεπίγραϕος with false title, not genuine ( < ancient Greek ψευδ- pseudo- comb. form + ἐπιγράϕειν to inscribe: see epigraph n.) + -ous suffix, after pseudepigrapha n. Compare earlier pseudepigraphal adj.
