Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French pugillat; Latin pugilātus.
Etymology: < Middle French pugillat boxing (1570; French pugilat ) and its etymon classical Latin pugilātus (also pugillātus) boxing < pugilāt- , past participial stem of pugilārī to box (see pugilant adj.) + -tus, suffix forming verbal nouns. Compare Italian pugilato (1592).
Obsolete. rare.
Boxing. Frequently in classical contexts.
