Etymology: Cognate with West Frisian nachtegeal , Middle Dutch nachtegāle (Dutch nachtegaal ), Old Saxon nahtagala , nahtigala (Middle Low German nachtegāle ), Old High German nahtagala , nahtgala (Middle High German nahtegal , nahtegale , German Nachtigall ), Old Swedish näktergala (Swedish näktergal ), early modern Danish naktergal , naktegale (Danish nattergal ) < the Germanic base of night n. + the Germanic base of Old English -e- connective + a Germanic weak noun derived from the base of gale v.1 Old Icelandic niktigala is a borrowing from Old English, and modern Icelandic næturgali is probably a borrowing from Danish; all the Scandinavian forms are ultimately borrowings from Middle Low German. Compare nightingale n.1The rare Old English forms nahtagala, nahtagalah, nahtgala (attested only in gloss collections preserved in continental manuscripts) probably show Old High German influence.
