Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Puccinia.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Puccinia, genus name (C. H. Persoon 1794, in Neues Magazin für die Botanik 1 118) < the name of Tommaso Puccini , Italian anatomist (fl. 17th–18th cent.) + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix¹.

Mycology.

A large genus of parasitic basidiomycete fungi of the order Uredinales, many of which have several hosts and include some serious agricultural and horticultural pests (rusts); (also puccinia) a fungus of this genus, esp. black stem rust of cereals, Puccinia graminis, which passes its winter stage on the leaves of barberry.
