Etymology: < (i) Pashto pūl money, one hundredth of an afghani, and its etymon (ii) Persian pūl small copper coin, perhaps < ancient Greek ὀβολός obolus n. Compare French pul (1659 in the passage translated in quot. 1662), German Pul (1656 in the passage translated in quot. 1662).

Originally: any of various small copper coins used in Iran and central Asia (now historical). Later: a monetary unit used in Afghanistan, equal to one hundredth of an afghani. Cf. Afghani n. 2.
