Etymology: < scientific Latin Psoroptes (F. L. P. Gervais 1841, in Ann. Sci. Nat. 15 9) < ancient Greek ψώρα psora n. + -optes (in scientific Latin Sarcoptes , genus name: see Sarcoptes n.). Compare French psoropte mite of the genus Psoroptes (1842). Compare earlier Sarcoptes n.Not fully naturalized in English.

Zoology.

A genus of ectoparasitic mites of the family Psoroptidae, which have piercing mouthparts and cause mange and scab in mammals; (also psoroptes) a mite of this genus.
