Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek ψωροϕθαλμία disease of the eyes, excessive dryness accompanied by itching ( < ancient Greek ψώρα psora n., or Hellenistic Greek ψωρός itchy ( < ancient Greek ψώρα ) + ancient Greek ὀϕθαλμία ophthalmia n.); probably via post-classical Latin psorophthalmia, although this is first attested later (1679 in the passage translated in quot. 1684). Compare earlier ophthalmia n. N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation as (pso^ərǫfþæ·lmiă) /psɔərɒfˈθælmɪə/.

Inflammation of the eyelids or their margins, esp. when accompanied by itching or ulceration. Cf. psorophthalmy n.
