Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Probably also partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Greek ψωροϕθαλμία; Latin psorophthalmia.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek ψωροϕθαλμία disease of the eyes, excessive dryness accompanied by itching ( < ancient Greek ψώρα psora n., or Hellenistic Greek ψωρός itchy ( < ancient Greek ψώρα ) + ancient Greek ὀϕθαλμία ophthalmia n.); probably via post-classical Latin psorophthalmia, although this is first attested later (1679 in the passage translated in quot. 1684). Compare earlier ophthalmia n. N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation as (psoərǫfþæ·lmiă) /psɔərɒfˈθælmɪə/.
Medicine. Obsolete.
Inflammation of the eyelids or their margins, esp. when accompanied by itching or ulceration. Cf. psorophthalmy n.

1851 Lancet 18 Oct. 364/1 Others have called it [sc. simple inflammation of the edges of the lids] psorophthalmia, or ophthalmia tarsi, and even the term scabies palpebrarum has been sometimes very incorrectly adopted.
