haveringadj.

Brit. /ˈheɪv(ə)rɪŋ/, U.S. /ˈheɪv(ə)rɪŋ/, Scottish English /ˈhev(ə)rɪŋ/
Forms: see haver v. and -ing suffix2; also 1700s hav'ren, 1800s averin (Galloway).
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: an element of uncertain origin, -ing suffix2; haver v., -ing suffix2.
Etymology: < a first element of uncertain origin (compare discussion at haver v.) + -ing suffix2. With sense 1 compare later haver v. and earlier clavering adj. at claver v.2 Derivatives. In sense 2 < haver v. (compare sense 2 at that entry) + -ing suffix2.
1. Chiefly Scottish. Given to or characterized by foolish or inconsequential chattering; garrulous, talkative; nonsensical. The sense of quot. 1720 is unclear; in the glossary at the end of the text (p. 373) haveren, havrel are glossed as ‘sloven’, and it is possible that hav'ren in the quot. means ‘slovenly’. Cf. haverel n. 1.
