Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: puff v., adder n.1
Etymology: < puff v. + adder n.1, so called from its defensive behaviour. In sense 1 after South African Dutch pofadder (Afrikaans pofadder).
1. A short, stout, and dangerously venomous African viper, Bitis arietans, which is normally sluggish, but in defence inflates the upper part of the body and hisses loudly when exhaling and inhaling. Also (usually with distinguishing word): any of several other African vipers of the genus Bitis.
