Etymology: < French Provence, the name of an area in the south-east of France on the Mediterranean coast (now forming part of the region of Provence–Alpes–Côte d'Azur) (end of the 13th cent.) < classical Latin prōvincia province n. (see note at that entry; in post-classical Latin also as Provencia Provence (7th cent.)). Compare province n. 3b.Provence occurs as a place name in English contexts from Old English onwards (in Old English as Profentse, Profentsæ, in Middle English as Prouence, Provence).
