Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Portuguese. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Portuguese provedor; Spanish proveedor.
Etymology: Partly < Portuguese provedor (14th cent.; < prover purvey v. + -dor , suffix forming agent nouns: see -or suffix), and partly < Spanish proveedor, †provedor (15th cent. < proveer purvey v. + -dor , suffix forming agent nouns: see -or suffix). Compare provider n. Compare earlier purveyor n. and proveditor n.Although a number of the English examples below refer to Venice, there is no evidence of this form of the word in Italian, where the equivalent is provveditore proveditor n.
