Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < lock v.¹ + chest n.¹ (perhaps so called on account of the woodlouse's habit of rolling itself up tightly), or perhaps a folk-etymological alteration (after these elements) of classical Latin locusta kind of crustacean (perhaps a lobster) (see locust n.; compare locust n. 3, locusta n. 1b); compare English regional (northern) lobstrous louse (1790), lobster louse (1868), both in the sense ‘woodlouse’. Slightly earlier currency is probably implied by lockchester n. Compare also lugdor n. and louk n.

1857 T. Wright On Hist. Eng. Lang. 17 Halliwell..ascertained that lockchest, or lockchester, was not an uncommon word in some parts of Oxfordshire for a woodlouse, although it was rapidly going out of use.

1904 A. S. Palmer Folk & their Word-lore iii. 53 This old word [sc. L. locusta], long survived in Oxfordshire in the form of lockchester and lockchest, as a dialect name of the wood-louse.
