Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek πτίλο-.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek πτίλο-, combining form (in e.g. πτιλόνωτος having a downy back; rare) of ancient Greek πτίλον soft feather, down ( < an ablaut variant of the Indo-European base of ancient Greek πέτεσθαι to fly (see feather n.) + -ιλο- , hypocoristic suffix); compare -o- connective. Compare scientific Latin ptilo- (formations in which are found from the first half of the 19th cent.).Found in a small number of scientific terms from the late 19th cent., apparently earliest in the native formation ptilogenesis n. Combining with second elements ultimately of Greek origin.
Forming nouns and adjectives in sense ‘of, relating to, or resembling feathers, esp. down feathers’.
ptilogenesis n. Zoology Obsolete rare the growth of feathers.Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
