Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from French. Etymons: Latin pterygoda; French ptérygodes.
Etymology: < either scientific Latin pterygoda (attributed to P. A. Latreille, c1820) or French ptérygodes (P. A. Latreille 1829, in Cuvier Règne animal (new ed.) IV. 310), both plural nouns, both < Hellenistic Greek πτερυγώδης winglike (already in ancient Greek as noun, denoting an emaciated person whose shoulder blades stick out like wings) < πτερυγ- , πτέρυξ wing (see pterygo- comb. form) + -ώδης -ode comb. form1.The form pterygodum shows an inferred singular of the scientific Latin plural noun.
Entomology. Now historical.
A small sclerite at the base of an insect's wing; a patagium or tegula (cf. patagium n. 1, tegula n. 1a).

1895 Proc. Zool. Soc. 264 The pterygodes are purplish black at base, with a large patch of white before the terminal fringe.
1927 Amer. Naturalist 61 237 While the term pterygodum of Latreille (1820–22) has priority, it was used in a restricted sense for the part at the base of the mesothoracic wing in the Lepidoptera and is rarely noted in the literature relating to the insects.
