Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pteropega.

Etymology: Originally < scientific Latin pteropega (see quot. 1826¹) < ptero- ptero- comb. form + ancient Greek πηγός well put together, solid < the stem of πηγνύναι to fix, make solid (see pectic adj.). Subsequently (in β. forms) reinterpreted as a plural form. Cent. Dict. (1890) and N.E.D. (1909) enter this under the singular form pteropegum.

Entomology. rare (now disused).

Originally (with singular agreement): the socket of an insect's wing. Later (with plural agreement): such sockets collectively.
