Etymology: < German Pterin (H. Wieland & C. Schöpf 1925, in Berichte der Deutsch. Chem. Ges. 58 2178) < ancient Greek πτερόν wing, feather (see ptero- comb. form) + German -in -in suffix¹, so called because it is found in insect wings (compare quot. 1954). Compare French ptérine (1950 or earlier).
