Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek πρωτοπαπᾶς.
Etymology: < Byzantine Greek πρωτοπαπᾶς, πρωτοπαππᾶς senior priest (9th cent.) < ancient Greek πρωτο- proto- comb. form + Byzantine Greek παπᾶς priest (see papas n.). Compare post-classical Latin protopapa (1625; also prothopapas ), Italian protopapa (1644). Compare earlier protopope n.Compare earlier protopapan ( < Byzantine Greek πρωτοπαπᾶς (see above) + -an suffix), in an apparently isolated use:1618 T. Gainsford Glory Eng. ii. xix. 283 Concerning the Greeke Church I will be bold to tell you, that I haue heard some of their Protopapans and Archimandritans maintaine their greatnesse, precedency, and truenesse of Religion before the Latine.
Now historical.
Esp. in the Byzantine Empire: a senior cleric granted jurisdiction over members of the Greek Orthodox Church. Cf. protopope n.Chiefly used as a title for an Orthodox or Uniate priest appointed by a Catholic ruler in place of a Greek Orthodox bishop.
