Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek προτομή.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek προτομή foremost or upper part of anything, bust or half-figure < ancient Greek προ- pro- prefix2 + τομή cutting (see -tomy comb. form), after προτέμνειν to cut off in front. Compare later protoma n.
Art and Architecture.
Originally: a bust. Now: a representation of the foremost or upper part of an animal (or occasionally a human) used to decorate a piece of sculpture, pottery, etc.
