Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: proton n., -lytic comb. form.
Etymology: < proto- (in proton n.) + -lytic comb. form, after German protolytisch (J. N. Brönsted 1930, in Zeitschr. f. angewandte Chem. 43 231/1). Compare slightly later protolysis n.

Designating or relating to a reaction or process in solution involving the transfer of a proton from one molecule to another (one of the molecules usually belonging to the solvent); (of a solvent) in which such reactions occur.
