Etymology: < pseudo- comb. form + -gynous comb. form. In specific use in entomology probably after German pseudogyn (E. Wasmann 1895: see pseudogyne n.); compare pseudogyne n., which is first attested slightly later in the spec. sense.

Designating an animal which is female in form or has female characteristics but does not function reproductively as a female; (Entomology) of or relating to a pseudogyne (pseudogyne n. 2).
