Etymology: < Heiltsuk bə́lxw speakers of Bella Coola.Nuxalk is now the preferred term of self-designation among members of the Bella Coola community (see Nuxalk n. and adj.).
1. A member of a grouping of four North American Indian peoples of the central British Columbia coast, Canada, having a common culture and language and now consolidated at the mouth of the Bella Coola River. Cf. Nuxalk n. 1.The grouping originally comprised the Bella Coola proper (of Bella Coola Valley), the Talio (of South Bentinck Arm), the Kimsquit (of Dean Channel), and the Kwatna (of Kwatna Inlet).
