Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: protocol n., -ist suffix.
Etymology: < protocol n. + -ist suffix. In sense 1 probably after French protocoliste (1715 in the passage translated in quot. 1727 at sense 1). With sense 1 compare Italian protocollista (a1748).
1. A person who records protocols (protocol n. 2); a registrar, a notary; a clerk, a secretary. Now chiefly historical.
