Etymology: < French protide (G. Bertrand 1923, in Bull. de la Soc. de Chimie Biologique 5 102) < prot- (in protéine protein n.) + -ide -ide suffix. The scheme of nomenclature proposed by Bertrand did not become established among English-speaking scientists (see Chem. & Engin. News (1952) 5 May, 1910). Protide now occurs chiefly in English translations or abstracts of papers in French.
