Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French propionique.

Etymology: < French propionique (in acide propionique propionic acid: J. Dumas et al. 1847, in Comptes rendus hebd. de l'Acad. des Sci. 25 783) < ancient Greek προ- pro- prefix² (or perhaps shortened < πρῶτο- proto- comb. form) + πιον- , πίων fat (see pioscope n.), with reference to propionic acid being the first in the order of the carboxylic acid series to form fatty compounds (formic (methanoic) and acetic (ethanoic) acids, which precede it in the series, lack this property) + French -ique -ic suffix.In propionic acid n. after French acide propionique (J. Dumas et al. 1847: see above). The acid had earlier been named metacetonic acid , metacetic acid : see metacetonic acid n. at metacetonic adj., metacetic acid n. at metacetic adj. Compare propio- comb. form.

a. propionic acid n. a colourless, sharp-smelling, liquid carboxylic acid, which is used (as are several of its salts and esters) as a food additive, esp. to inhibit mould growth in bread. Also called propanoic acid, propylic acid.Formula: CH₃CH₂COOH.
