Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin prophetico-.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin prophetico- (1664 or earlier in work titles), combining form of propheticus prophetic adj.; compare -o- connective.Found in a small number of formations and adaptations of foreign words from the first half of the 19th cent. German compounds with prophetisch as first element are recorded from at least the second half of the 19th cent.; compare e.g. prophetisch-visionär (1853 in the passage translated in quot. 1857), prophetisch-messianisch (1864 in the passage translated in quot. 1865 for prophetico-messianic adj. at sense 2).
