Etymology: < classical Latin prōlētāneus belonging to the lowest class of citizens (recorded in an 8th-cent. epitome of a 2nd-cent. grammarian; < prōlēs proles n. + -t- (probably after prōlētārius proletary n.) + -āneus : see -aneous suffix) + -ous suffix. Compare earlier proletarious adj., proletarian adj., proletary adj.
Obsolete. rare.
