Etymology: < Dutch boeier kind of small cargo ship (1514 as boyer ; earlier in Middle Dutch in boyerscip kind of small sailing ship), kind of small pleasure boat (late 18th cent.), apparently < Middle Dutch boeyen to raise a ship's side with planks (Dutch boeien ; compare also Dutch opboeien , now more common), perhaps spec. use of boeyen to put in irons (with reference to the way the planks were fastened; Dutch boeien ) < bōie fetter, shackle, chain (Dutch boei ; < classical Latin bōia boy n.²) + -er -er suffix¹. Compare Middle Low German bojer (also böjer , bojert , boigert , boyert ), either cognate with or borrowed < Middle Dutch, and also Swedish bojort (1533 as bojart , bojert ), Danish bøjert (already in early modern Danish), both < Middle Low German.
