Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: French protéroglyphe , -ous suffix; Latin Proteroglypha , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < either French protéroglyphe proteroglyph adj. or scientific Latin Proteroglypha (see proteroglyph n.) + -ous suffix. Compare earlier proteroglyph adj., and also opisthoglyphous adj.
Zoology.
Designating or characteristic of a venomous snake having fixed fangs in the front of the jaw with grooves or channels to conduct the venom, characteristic of snakes of the family Elapidae.
