Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin propagulum.
Etymology: < scientific Latin propagulum (1807 or earlier) < classical Latin propāgō shoot laid down in layering, runner (see propagate v.) + -ulum -ulum suffix. Compare later propagule n.The plural form propagulae apparently arose from reinterpretation of the plural propagula as a Latin feminine singular.
Botany.
A portion of a plant, lichen, etc., capable of giving rise to a new individual; spec. (a) (in a lichen) a fragment of the thallus capable of propagating the lichen; (b) a runner (obsolete); (c) (in certain brown algae) a modified branch which serves to reproduce the plant vegetatively. Cf. propagule n.
