Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin proglottis.

Etymology: < scientific Latin proglottis (F. Dujardin, 1843 in Ann. Sci. Nat. 20 ( Zoologie) 342) < Hellenistic Greek προγλωσσιδ- , προγλωσσίς (the Attic form would be *προγλωττίς , but this is unrecorded) tip of the tongue < ancient Greek προ- pro- prefix² + γλῶσσα , (Attic) γλῶττα tongue (see gloss n.¹) + -ίς -id suffix²; compare Hellenistic Greek γλωττίς glottis, mouthpiece of a pipe (see glottis n.), already in ancient Greek denoting a kind of bird. The segment was so named on account of its shape.Applied by Dujardin to a detached living segment of a tapeworm; by P. J. Van Beneden in 1850, and by subsequent writers, to the segment whether attached or detached.
