1930 W. M. Allen in Amer. Jrnl. Physiol. 92 174 We have as yet proposed no name for this hormone of the corpus luteum... In so far as we are acquainted with its physiological behavior, its chief action lies in its ability, by alteration of the endometrium, to aid gestation in the castrated rabbit; and for this reason we wish to propose for it the name progestin, i.e., a substance which favors gestation.
1935 W. M. Allen et al. in Nature 24 Aug. 303/2 Heretofore, two different names have been used in the literature for this hormone (progestin, luteosterone). For the sake of international uniformity, we agree to use..the name progesterone for the pure hormone.
1945 H. Burrows Biol. Actions Sex Hormones xxi. 389 More than one substance having the same kind of action as progesterone is known, and a generic name is therefore convenient. The author has used the term ‘progestin’ to denote chemical compounds having a biological action comparable with that of progesterone. [Note] ‘Progestogen’ has been suggested as an alternative generic name.
1966 New Scientist 15 Dec. 620/1 The synthetic progestins which are contained in all oral contraceptive tablets were in fact introduced for the wrong reason.
1995 Herizons (Winnipeg) Winter 24/3 Progestins also have negative side effects. Commonly, women complain of PMS-like symptoms including breast tenderness, bloating, mood swings and depression.
