Etymology: < Middle French prosterner to cast down (1329), to prostrate oneself (1478; French prosterner ) and its etymon classical Latin prōsternere to knock over, knock down, to lay prostrate, to stretch out, to exhaust the strength of, to strike down, to overthrow, defeat < prō- pro- prefix1 + sternere to lay flat (see stratum n.). Compare Italian prosternere (a1342, now archaic). Compare earlier prostrate v.With prosterning n. compare earlier prosternation n. and prostrating n.
Obsolete.
transitive. To cast down or lay flat. Chiefly reflexive: to prostrate oneself.

1612 J. Gordon Εἰρηνοκοινωνία sig. Eiij In..prayers there is a threefold kinde of gesture..: the first is a falling downe or prosterning of the body: the second is..a bowing downe of the head to the ground. The third is kneeling.
