Etymology: Apparently < post-classical Latin proficium (8th cent.), variant of proficuum profit, advantage, benefit (6th cent.), use as noun of neuter of proficuus beneficial, advantageous (see proficuous adj.) + -ary suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin proficuarius beneficiary (c1250 in a British source).
Obsolete. rare.
