Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Namur , -ian suffix.
Etymology: < Namur, the name of a town and province in southern Belgium + -ian suffix, after French namurien. The term was apparently coined by J. C. Purves c1883, although his use has not been traced; compare:1891 X. Stainier in Ann. de la Soc. Géol. de Belgique: Mém. 18 60 Les roches susdites font partie de l'assise de houiller inférieur sans houille de Dumont (étage namurien de M. Purves).
