Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French prôneur.
Etymology: < French prôneur priest who delivers a homily (1611), flatterer (a1660) < prôner prone v.1 + -eur -eur suffix.In quot. 1809, prôneure may be intended to represent a feminine form, although the corresponding French word is proneuse. N.E.D. (1908) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (pronȫr) /pronœr/.
Now rare.
A person who praises another; a flatterer, an extoller, a eulogist.
