Etymology: < French pricas (1659 in the passages translated in quots. 1662 at sense 1 and 1662 at sense 2) and its etymon Russian prikaz order, command (15th cent. or earlier), office, department (16th cent. or earlier), military unit (16th cent. or earlier). The Lawes of Russia Written (MS., 1599) mentions the word in twelve Russian phrases explained under the heading ‘The courtes and officers nowe in place in the Emps. castell att Mosko’, e.g. ‘Posolskoy Prikaze, or office of Embassages’ (see Oxford Slavonic Papers New Ser. 29 (1990) 19–38). O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (prika·z) /priˈkaz/.
