Etymology: < scientific Latin Ptenopleura, former division name (1858 or earlier, attributed to J. van der Hoeven; < ancient Greek πτηνός feathered (see ptenoglossate adj.) + πλευρά side of the body: see pleura n.) + -al suffix1. N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation as (pt-, tī:noplūə·răl) /ˌ(p)tiːnəʊˈplʊərəl/.
Zoology. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
Of, relating to, or characteristic of the former division Ptenopleura of mammals (now the order or suborder Dermoptera), comprising the colugos or flying lemurs.
