单词 psydracium
释义

psydraciumn.

Inflections: Plural psydracia.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin psydracium.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin psydracium (1583 in the passage translated in quot. 1585 as psydracia, perhaps by misinterpretation of the neuter plural form as feminine singular; 10th cent. as psydracion) < Hellenistic Greek ψυδράκιον pimple, pustule < Byzantine Greek ψυδρακ-, ψύδραξ ( > post-classical Latin psydrax, plural psydraces (1679 or earlier)) pimple, pustule (although this is apparently first attested later), of uncertain origin + -ιον, diminutive suffix.Hellenistic Greek ψυδράκιον is explained in scholia (medieval Greek or earlier) on Theocritus 12. 24 as a blister on the nose caused by lying, and is derived from ψυδρός lying, false, but this is now considered a popular etymology. Post-classical Latin psydracium is not found in Celsus; in the passage referred to in quot. 1684 he uses classical Latin phlyzacion phlyzacium n. Paulus and Alexander, also mentioned in this quot., are Byzantine Greek medical writers. N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation as (psidrēi·siɒ̆m) /psɪˈdreɪsɪəm/.
